Tax the Internet?

To answer some of the questions regarding taxation of the Internet:

Here is an email I received from the chairman of the CATS Glendale Chapter on that very subject:

"It is true that the majority of Americans prefer Internet sales to be left untaxed. It is also a cinch that the majority within this majority has given very little thought to it."

"Internet sales are taxed already, by the semi-legal robbery of taxation on incomes. That is the worst possible form of taxation--though it has gained a (hopefully temporary) prominence in the world with the advent of organized forms of Communism in the 20th century. There is hope that this aberration can be remedied."

"Nobody wants "new taxes", that is sure. Hence the rather automatic position of "no Internet Taxes" -- which would seem to fall into the "new taxes" category."

"Yet a preferential treatment of the Net if continued indefinitely would only mean (A) the ruin of anything that is not Internet and (B) huge income taxes collected on the Internet profits anyhow -- for the governments to waste."

"The states, deprived of parts of their revenues would probably have to try to resort to state income taxes (I take this as a worst form of taxation indeed). All this would only mean huge shifts in tax burdens from side to side, with the key suspect -- the federal taxation on incomes -- largely unaffected."

"Please let us remove the federal income tax; and leave the Internet matters for later."

"This issue -- no Internet taxes -- is a perfect demagoguery for the tax-and-waste federal crowd; and this only serves to turn people's attention from the main villainy, of taxing incomes. Let us not fall into the trap of this distraction."

Sincerely yours,

National Sales Tax: FAIRNESS & FREEDOM for all!

- - - - - -

Editor’s Note:

The confusion underlying this debate over whether the Internet should be subject to taxation or not is that, again, almost everyone is missing the point. The Internet is already being taxed!!! It's called the income tax. It's embedded in everything! The tax is concealed in all goods and services, including those sold over the Internet.

The problem with this is that no one knows how much they are paying when the taxes are hidden; as is inherent with any form of income taxation on businesses.

It's a knee-jerk response. "No new taxes!" is the battle- cry. "No taxes on the Internet!", is heard far and wide. But the truth of the matter is never mentioned by those on the Internet or by the mainstream media. The truth is: The Internet is already being taxed!! Wake up to this fact.

This is a prime example of how the income tax system pits one group against another. The Internet businesses against the brick-and-mortar businesses!

Once more, the solution is: Replace ALL income taxes with a national retail sales tax. And tax everything. This will accurately reflect the reality of how much we pay in taxes instead of the fiction that we are taxed less than we actually are.

I hope this helps to clear up some of the confusion regarding taxing the Internet - or any business for that matter. It could be summed up in the following simple formula:

Income taxes = Bad for businesses and individuals.
Sales taxes = Good for businesses and individuals.

Watch TV on Tuesday, April 11th

The hearings you have all been waiting for are now scheduled to take place in less than a week. Yes, the first tax reform hearings of the year 2000 in the powerful Ways and Means Committee will be on Tuesday, April 11, 2000. Get your TV and VCR ready so that you will be able to watch and tape this historic event. Tune in to CSPAN early to find out when the hearings will be broadcast so that you won’t miss it.

Rumor has it that Rep. Dick Armey and Rep. Billy Tauzin will be doing their famous "Scrap the Code" Debate in front of the Ways and Means Committee. If so, you definitely don’t want to miss this one!!

Terminate the Tax Code

There is a bill in Congress right now that will terminate the Tax Code by Dec. 31, 2001 and it also requires that Congress have a new tax system in place by July 4, 2002. It’s known as: "H.R. 1041, The Date Certain Tax Code Replacement Act."

This bill is sponsored by Rep. Steve Largent, and has 139 Reps. signed on as cosponsors. Nevada’s Rep. Shelley Berkley and Rep. Jim Gibbons have NOT signed on as cosponsors.

I understand that Congress is scheduled to vote on this bill April 13th, so you only have a few days to call and urge them both to vote "Yes" on "H.R. 1041, The Date Certain Tax Code Replacement Act."

Then write a short note to both of our Nevada Representatives in the U.S. Congress and ask each one to explain why they did not sign on as cosponsors to this important legislation. And while you’re at it, ask each of them why they have not signed on as cosponsors to "H.R. 2001, The National Retail Sales Tax Act of 1999" or "H.R. 2525, The Fair Tax." Here is where you may contact them:

Rep. Shelley Berkley
2340 Paseo Del Prado, Ste. D-106
Las Vegas, NV 89102
Phone: (702) 220-9823
Email: shelley.berkley@mail.house.gov

Rep. Jim Gibbons
850 S. Durango Dr., Ste. 107
Las Vegas, NV 89128
Phone: (702) 255-1651
Email: mail.gibbons@mail.house.gov

In fact, since both of the NV Reps. receive this newsletter, we, of the CATS Las Vegas Chapter would respectfully like to know the answers to the above questions. We ask that you send your responses to the address below. Thank you Rep. Berkley and Rep. Gibbons. And yes, we urge you both to vote "Yes" on H.R. 1041.

Remember, this is an election year. Find out where your candidates stand on this issue! We, the members of the CATS Las Vegas Chapter, will vote for the candidates who support the national retail sales tax.

CATS National Event!

CATS and several of the other tax reform groups have tentatively scheduled a joint national event to take place in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, April 13; the same day as the vote on H.R. 1041. If you would like to participate in this history making event, contact the CATS National Office at 1-800-767-7577.
