It is Time to Scrap
The Tax Code

We can scrap the outdated, inefficient tax code. Thanks to several Members of Congress, legislation has been re-introduced which would sunset the income tax code on December 31, 2005.

The bill number is H.R. 2714. It is titled "The Date Certain Tax Code Replacement Act of 2001".

As of March 15, 2002 there were 144 Representatives signed-on as cosponsors.

With an Administration in place that is considering real tax reform, it is more important now than ever that the House of Representatives pass this bill again to demonstrate consistent support for bringing common sense to our tax system.

The bill would require Congress to create a new tax code that is fair and simple, six months prior to sunsetting the current tax code.

This legislation is an important first step in providing hard-working Americans the type of simple and fair tax system that they deserve. In order for fundamental tax reform to become a reality, Congress must first decide to have an open and honest debate as to what an ideal tax code should be. This legislation provides the opportunity for such a debate.

I urge you to support this bill and to ask your members of Congress to support this bill. Make your calls and write your letters now!

HR 2714 Scrap the Code

Please see the article above regarding the bill to sunset the tax code. We want to bring this bill up for a vote in the not too distant future. Here is how it goes: Congressmen have to hear from constituents stating the importance of backing this bill. When the leadership feels there is enough support in Congress they will be encouraged to bring it to the floor for a vote.

You can see from the above article that this is a popular bill. Your call or letter or fax is not a throw away action. It will count. I was talking to one CATS member who made 24 calls in less than 45 minutes! It is worth the time spent. This kind of action is part of making grass roots work.

1. Go to: http://www.house.gov/house/MemberWWW.html (This is case sensitive - type exactly as shown.) Type in your zip code and state and your representative will appear. You may immediately send him or her an e-mail.

2. From the same location you can go to the representatives Web site and get the contact information to be able to write and fax his or her office. DO BOTH in addition to the e-mail. Tell them to support HR2714.

3. Go to: http://www.senate.gov/senators/senator_by_state.cfm Find your state and click on each senator (one at a time) which will take you to their site. E-mail and write and fax your support for HR2714.

That is all that is needed right now. They will be on recess from Friday the 22nd of March to Tuesday the 9th of April on Spring Break. This means a call to their district office would be appropriate too.
