"Call to Washington!" Video
New Release
Here's your chance
to be one of the select few people to see the
first-run showing of the newest release in CATS'
extensive video library. It will be our pleasure to
present a "Call to Washington!" at our July 12
meeting. This is a professionally produced video of
the rally and press conference announcing the
introduction of "H.R. 2001, The National Retail Sales
Tax Act of 1999" on April 15, 1999. These are actual
video clips of that day in the Gold Room of the
Rayburn office building of the U.S. House of
Representatives, showing many of the Congressional
supporters and the excitement surrounding this
historical first step towards elimination of the IRS
and income tax, and a simple, fair, sane tax
system.
If you recall, with
your help we sent our own Joseph Bauer to D.C. to
represent Nevada and take part in these events. Now
is your opportunity to witness what he saw and heard
firsthand. Many of those who have seen this video
reported the feeling of overwhelming inspiration and
hope it caused. Several of them also mentioned the
extremely rousing speech by Rep. James Traficant
(D-Ohio), one of our newest supporters and a
Co-author of H.R. 2001.
If for some reason
you are unable to attend the July meeting, call
1-800-767-7577 and order your copy of the "Call
to Washington" video. This is one video you will want
to show to everyone you know!
No power...No problem
...for the CATS of LV!
On Monday, June 14,
I arrived at the Whitney Library around 6:15 p.m. to
start setting things up for our monthly CATS meeting
as usual. But things were not as usual. The Library
was in darkness. No lights, no air conditioning...NO
Electricity!! Oh, how we take things like electric
power for granted. How dare the power be out!! The
meeting would be starting in 45 minutes, and as
everyone who knows me knows...the CATS Las Vegas
Chapter meets at the appointed time, come rain, hail,
snow or dark of night! It's a good thing the terrific
staff at the Whitney Library agreed with me on this
point, or I would have been in trouble. We looked at
the meeting room and determined that there was enough
light coming from the window and the small emergency
light to go ahead and hold the meeting; especially
since I pointed out, the local CATS members were
already on their way to the Library.
By 7:00
approximately 20 people had arrived and taken their
seats in the warm, stuffy, semi-darkness. I felt a
great sense of admiration for these people who attend
the monthly meetings, even under adverse conditions
such as this. At a few minutes after 7:00 the rest of
the group had arrived and the meeting got underway.
Around 7:15 the Library officials notified us that
they had been ordered by their superiors to close the
Library at 7:30 p.m. Well, our meetings usually last
until at least 8:30, so I was pressed to cover
everything in about one-third the allotted time. It
was definitely not the ideal scene, but the meeting
proved to be one of our most productive. We had a
great turnout, and everyone took the poor conditions
and shortened time in stride.
This truly
demonstrates that the members of the CATS Las Vegas
Chapter are a dedicated group of individuals who will
not be stopped. I am proud to be the chairman of this
exceptional CATS chapter! Thank you Las Vegas
CATS!!
CATS National
Busy as bees
At the national
level CATS has been very active, with our National
Chairman, Vic Krohn, recently doing a total of six
separate TV and radio shows (3 each) in Raleigh, NC.
This, along with preparations for a strong CATS
presence in both Iowa (for the straw poll) and New
Hampshire (for the presidential primaries) and
producing two new videos, has kept our staff at the
CATS National Office extremely busy. It is my
understanding that the second of the two videos,
featuring nationally renowned tax expert Dan Pilla,
will be the key tool in CATS' upcoming national
petition campaign. We plan on showing this second
video at our August meeting so mark Monday, August 9
on your calendar as the day to attend the CATS
monthly meeting. And remember, please plan on
attending our July 12 meeting to see the "Call to
Washington" video.
I also learned that
Vic has met with Rep. Traficant's staff with the
purpose of working on future strategy to promote the
national retail sales tax at the national level.
Watch for more news of this promising activity in
future newsletters.
These are only a few
of the most recent notable actions being done by the
hard-working staff at the national office of Citizens
for an Alternative Tax System - CATS. They deserve
our thanks and support!! "Thank you!!",
from the CATS Las Vegas Chapter.
Terminator S. 627
The beginning of the end
There is currently a
bill in the U.S. Senate appropriately titled, "S.
627, The Tax Code Termination Act", which calls for
"the termination the Internal Revenue Code by
December 31, 2003." This bill further states:
"SEC. 3. NEW FEDERAL TAX SYSTEM.
(a) STRUCTURE-
The Congress hereby declares that any new Federal tax
system should be a simple and fair system
that--
- (1) applies a low rate to all
Americans,
- (2) provides tax relief for working
Americans,
- (3) protects the rights of taxpayers and
reduces tax collection abuses,
- (4) eliminates the bias against savings and
investment,
- (5) promotes economic growth and job
creation, and
- (6) does not penalize marriage or
families.
(b) TIMING OF
IMPLEMENTATION- In order to ensure an easy transition
and effective implementation, the Congress hereby
declares that any new Federal tax system should be
approved by Congress in its final form not later than
July 4, 2003."
The passage of this
bill would push Congress to reform or replace the
current destructive tax system by a certain date,
namely July 4, 2003. Since Congress sometimes moves
slowly or not at all on certain issues, this
legislation would give them a deadline; at which
point changes must take place. Sometimes it is
necessary to have a time limit, so that people will
go into action.
I think it would be
a good idea if we all contacted Senator William Roth,
Finance Committee Chairman, and Senator Trent Lott,
Senate Majority Leader, at the U.S. Senate,
Washington, DC 20510, as well as our own Nevada U.S.
Senators and request their support for "S. 627, the
Tax Code Termination Act." This will open the debate
on tax reform/replacement. So, call and write these
elected officials today! At the same time you might
mention that a suitable replacement tax system has
been found: "H.R. 2001, The National Retail Sales Tax
Act of 1999."
