New President
By the time you receive this newsletter we, the citizens of this great country, (or maybe the electoral college), will have chosen a new President to lead us through the next four years.
CATS Las Vegas Chapter would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the winner and request that he look closely at the issue of tax reform, especially the National Retail Sales Tax Act, sponsored by Rep. Billy Tauzin and Rep. James Traficant.
Congratulations to the new President of the United States!!
New CATS Membership Brochure
CATS has designed a terrific new membership brochure titled "How Can I Prosper? Taxes and you." You will definitely want to get a few of these brochures to give out to your friends, relatives, neighbors and co-workers.
These brochures will be available at our monthly meetings or you can call me at 454-5736 or
call CATS at 1-800-767-7577 to arrange to get some.
It is designed for CATS Members to use to sign up new members. It is not just a general handout. The plan is for every CATS member to pass out these brochures at work or in the neighborhood, and then tell the person they will be back in 30 minutes to get the order form and check for $35.00! It's that easy!! We have plans to translate it into Spanish also.
Let's work together
Coalition of tax reform groups
National Taxpayers Union (NTU) recently cosponsored a series of forums on tax reform that highlighted the need for serious tax reform. The forums focused on the flat tax and proposals for a national retail sales tax, such as H.R. 2001 the National Retail Sales Tax Act of 2000 and H.R. 2525 the Fair Tax.
These forums were a first in that they were made up of a coalition of tax reform groups who are all working on the issue of tax reform, even though each group has its own separate plan. The coalition is composed of the following groups:
The purpose of the coalition is that by banding together we are bringing fundamental tax reform back onto the radar screen in Washington, DC and around the country.
A coalition of groups all pushing the necessity of fundamental tax reform and attacking the current system will work far better than separate groups stressing their solution in competition with each other. That only plays into the hands of those who oppose tax reform of any kind.
The most important thing is to keep the purpose alive. Together we can stay focused on the idea of fundamental tax reform and thus achieve our goal of a sane tax system.
CATS President Steve Hayes has been working to focus attention on the fact that under the current system, those who report their income and pay taxes are paying higher taxes due to widespread tax evasion. Law abiding citizens who pay the taxes they owe actually pay 30% more in taxes because of the evasion under the present tax system.
So, if your Representative and Senators are not actively supporting real tax reform, then they are supporting higher taxes for the average citizen who reports his income and pays his taxes. Write to them, making this point very clear, and ask where they stand on this issue. Most of us do not want to pay higher taxes because of the tax evaders. Do you? How about your Members of Congress? Do they? Find out.
An Idea Who's Time Has Come!
"Humorist Dave Barry proposes a friend's idea on how to simplify tax law: Every April 15, lock up all members of Congress in prison cells with tax forms and the tax code. Keep them there 'without food or water, until they had completed their tax returns and successfully undergone a full IRS audit.' Naturally, Mr. Barry says, 'this system would probably result in a severe shortage of congresspersons. But there might also be some drawbacks.'"

The following article was written before the Presidential election and is included here as an entertaining piece on the subject of tax reform:
"Gettysburg Address 2000"
by Chuck Muth
(With all due respect and apologies to Honest Abe)
November 2, 2000
Four score and seven years ago (that would be 1913 for those of you who went to public school) our forefathers' misguided descendants brought forth on this continent via the 16th Amendment to the Constitution, a new income tax system, conceived in stupidity, and dedicated to the proposition that all men and women are created equal when it comes to getting screwed by the federal government and the IRS ... except for the "richest 1 percent," of course.
Now we are engaged in a great war, testing whether that tax system, or any tax system so complicated and so burdensome, can long endure. We meet this election on a great battlefield of that war - the ballot box. We dedicate a portion of this election to those candidates who risked their political careers that tax relief and tax reform might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
But in a larger sense, we can not dedicate - we can not consecrate - we can not hallow - this election. The brave men and women, living and dead, who struggled for an end to the marriage penalty and the death tax - who have fought for a flat tax or national sales tax - have consecrated it far above our poor power to itemize deductions or claim the Investment Tax Credit.
The world will little note, nor long remember what Al Gore has said about targeted tax relief for the "right people," but it will never forget that he was the tie-breaking vote for the largest tax increase in the history of the world.
It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work of across-the-board tax cuts and tax simplification which they who fought in the halls of Congress have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us - that from all those vetoed tax cuts by Bill Clinton we take increased devotion to that cause for which many Republicans gave the last full measure of devotion - that we here highly resolve that these dead tax cut bills shall not have died in vain - that this nation, under God (uh-oh, here comes the ACLU!) and a newly-elected President George W. Bush, shall have a new birth of freedom - and that this income tax system of the bureaucrat, by the bureaucrat, for the bureaucrat, shall perish from the earth, with a stake driven through its heart so that it shall never rise to prey upon and terrorize the American taxpayer again (with all due credit to Steve Forbes).
