Freedom!!

“Freedom” is a concept, an idea. One which understandably evokes much emotion and passion. But “Freedom” is also subject to much confusion and misunderstanding. The dictionary defines freedom as: ‘the condition of being free; liberty; independence.’ The dictionary further states: ‘Freedom, liberty mean being able to act without interference or control by another.’ The word freedom comes from the word free; which is defined as: ‘not under another’s control; not a captive or slave; having liberty; able to do, act or think as one pleases.’ But the word free is also defined as: ‘without cost or payment.’ So, the question arises: “Is freedom free?”

Is freedom free or does it come with a price? If it does, how much does it cost? How much is it worth to you? If you lost it, how much would you pay to get it back? Is freedom something that everyone should just receive automatically without actually having to DO anything to earn it? Is it simply given out to everyone, or does one have to earn it?

Here is my opinion on the subject: Freedom definitely comes with a price. It requires that you remain alert to any and all attempts to steal it away. It demands that you are willing and able to fight back when someone tries to take it from you. This by itself is a full-time job! That may seem a very high price!! But freedom is worth all that and more. If it was taken from you, that would seem a small price to pay. Freedom is not something which you inherit as a birthright; it is hard fought for and won. Freedom is earned by taking responsibility for possessing it and guarding it with care.

If you believe in freedom and are willing to take those small steps to insure not only your freedom but the freedom of future generations, then join with us to create the groundswell of public support necessary for the adoption of a national retail sales tax in place of the suppressive income tax and the oppressive agency created by it...the IRS. GET INVOLVED!!! Come to our monthly meetings or call CATS toll-free (there’s that word again) at 1-800-767-7577, in Las Vegas call 454-5736 and find out what you can do for Freedom.

Local CATS

Marvin Wear, most active of the Las Vegas CATS, is at it again! Not only does he call-in daily to the local radio talk-shows, but he also writes letters-to-the-editor to all the local newspapers. Here is one of his letters that was published in the Las Vegas Business Press on October 18, 1999:

Replace IRS with National Retail Sales Tax
Editor:

I read the advice column October 4th regarding year-end tax savings and I did pick up a few tips that will help me out this coming April 15th tax day. It also got me wondering if the writer, Gary Klott, had ever heard of the National Retail Sales Tax. A tax system being talked about that would replace the present tax system and abolish the IRS, as in NO IRS, no filing a tax return on April 15th, no saving record receipts for 7 to 10 years. And yes, no dreaded letter from the IRS saying you're being audited.

You know, most of us were born into this tax system. I've come to find out it's wrong, we need to stop punishing success in this country and start rewarding savings and hard work. So, in a nutshell, abolishing the IRS and adapting a National Retail Sales Tax accomplishes:

  • No corporate income tax
  • No personal income tax
  • No capital gains
  • No inheritance tax
  • No gift tax

Sound good so far? Well, I'm working hard with C.A.T.S., Citizens for an Alternative Tax System, to make it happen, check it out!
-Marvin Wear, Las Vegas

Marvin also passed along this tidbit of information which was published in the Las Vegas Review-Journal:

The real tax cheats.
“When individuals appeal audit findings to the IRS Appeals Office, it sustains barely 30 cents on the dollar of additional taxes assessed during audits. In other words, almost 70 cents of each dollar of additional taxes that auditors demand is found to be unjustified. In percentage terms, the IRS apparently cheats far more often during tax audits than average Americans cheat on their tax returns.” James Bovard, “The IRS, Now and Forever,” article in the November 1998 edition of “The Freeman,” a publication of the Foundation for Economic Education, Irvington-on-Hudson, N.Y.

This just in from the CATS
National Office:

Rep. Bill Archer, Chairman of the powerful Ways and Means Committee, is definitely committed to having hearings on tax reform starting in February of 2000. Chairman Archer is still enthusiastic about the national sales tax and promotes it everywhere he goes.

Rep. Billy Tauzin, sponsor of H.R. 2001, is very excited because there are a number of Members of Congress with whom he has spoken who are moving toward becoming cosponsors of the national retail sales tax bill. Rep. Tauzin has also been asked to participate in additional “Scrap the Code” debates with Rep. Dick Armey (R-TX), which will help to educate many more citizens regarding the national sales tax. Editors note: If you haven’t seen these debates, I urge you to order the “Scrap the Code” video from the CATS National Office: 1-800-767-7577.

If you are a current CATS member, watch your mailbox for the CATS National Newsletter to arrive within the next two weeks with exciting news!
